Dear Parents, Boys & Girls,
We hope you are all doing ok at home. We understand it is a difficult time for everybody and we are mindful of the fact that many of you are now working from home while trying to maintain some structure for your children.
Along with our link teachers and SNAs, both of whom support the boys & girls learning in school, we have prepared a range of suitable activities for the boys & girls in Junior Infants. While none of these activities and tasks are compulsory, we strongly encourage you to complete a few each day to minimise the impact these unprecedented times have on your child's learning and to ensure the boys & girls are exposed to a range of tasks each day.
We suggest that each day you structure your child's day to include
Digital learning (recommended apps : Hairy Letters, Jolly Phonics, Starfall, Little Digits)
Creative learning (play dough, building blocks, art & craft, baking)
Physical learning (scooter, bike, running, jumping jacks, skipping with a rope etc)
Table top learning (writing practice, phonics, mental maths, practical maths)
This week why don't you try some of the below activities:
Go Noodle - on this website you will find a range of videos focused on guided dance, meditation & reflection, indoor workouts and many, many more. This is always a big hit in school !!
Search Artforkidshub on YouTube. Following short videos children take part in guided drawing lessons to create minions, leprechauns, animals, cartoon characters etc
RTE Player have a lovely programme called 'Ár mbia, ár slí' which is a series of short episodes following páistí óga baking and cooking with their parents as Gaeilge. While they won't understand all of the Irish, it might be a nice way to maintain the boys & girls interest in the Irish language. Maybe you could try some of the recipes at home!
Lego Challenge - Why not use your Lego, Mobilo, wooden blocks etc to create something special. With parental supervision, children could use WhatsApp to connect with other children taking part in the challenge to tell them about their creation, why they made it, how they made it, challenges they faced etc.
Table Top learning - Please take time each day to read with your child and to listen to them reading to you. Go back over their Tricky Words using any of the pages we distributed as part of homework in weeks gone by. Give your child some words/phrases to dictate. (A big dog. A red fox. I can hop. A hot cup. I can jump. I am hot.) Do some mental maths tasks with your child also eg. Counting forwards and backwards to 10, what number comes next/before, clap the number, recite number rhymes eg 12345 Once I Caught a Fish Alive, 5 Little Monkeys etc.
Treat this like their daily homework and spend no more than 15 minutes on the above tasks.
Please take a look back at previous posts which outlined many more websites and suggested activities to refer to over the next little while.
Please see the attached page for additional ideas. Perhaps you'd like to print and colour as you complete the tasks/challenges over the coming weeks. Feel free to bring it into school when we return to show us what you've been doing while self-isolating!
We will be back in touch in a few more days with some more ideas and suggestions. In the meantime be sure to heed HSE guidance on social distancing and limited gatherings.
Stay safe and we hope to see you all happy and healthy very soon!
Ms. Mulhall, Mrs. Goodall, Mrs. Kelly & Ms. Mc Govern
