Active Schools FlagThe Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education in May 2009 and is organised through Mayo Education Centre. The purpose of the initiative is to recognise schools (primary, post primary and special schools) that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.

This year we were awarded our second Active School Flag in Mary Mother of Hope JNS and look forward to celebrating this achievement later in the school year. In order to achieve the flag, we demonstrated that we:
- Adhere to DES Guidelines regarding PE timetable provision for all students.
- Teach a broad and balanced PE curriculum.
- Inform and invite the whole school community to participate in the ASF process.
- Self-evaluate current provision in terms of P.E, Physical Activity and Community Links.
- Plan and implement improvements for each of the aforementioned areas.
- Organise an ‘Active School Week’ as part of the annual school calendar.
- See http://www.activeschoolflag.ie/ for more information regarding the Active School Flag process.
Meet Our Active Schools Committee

Partnerships
Below are some of the organisations and agencies we work with throughout the year as part of the Active Schools initiative.
Initiatives
We run a number of programmes during the school year as part of our broad and varied PE provision and as part of our Health Promoting Schools initiative.
Be Active ASAP After Schools Programme

We currently run the Be Active ASAP After Schools Programme on Mondays in the school hall for groups of children from 1st and 2nd Class. We have a number of volunteers, both teachers and parents, who facilitate the sessions. It's a fantastic way to get children involved in Gymnastics, Games, Athletics, Dance and Outdoor & Adventure activities outside of school hours.
Well Done Wall
We celebrate achievements in sporting events outside of school.
D.E.A.R. - Drop Everything And Run
We Drop Everything and Run throughout the week in school and track our progress as we go by colouring in a smiley face for each 200m we run.
